dc.descriptionThe aim of this study is to show the role of the city of Porto as an active shipbuilding center during the 15th and 16th centuries, which was used by the Portuguese kings to build modern vessels. The great capacity of the local shipowners was decisive in the choice of the shipyards in Porto for the construction of the first boats that traveled to India, predecessors of the sixteenth century ships.en_US
dc.description.abstractA intenção deste estudo é dar a conhecer o papel da cidade do Porto como um acti-vo centro de construção naval durante os séculos XV e XVI, o qual foi usado pelosreis portugueses para construir embarcações modernas. A grande capacidade dosarmadores locais foi decisiva na escolha dos estaleiros do Porto para a construção dosprimeiros barcos que viajaram até à Índia, predecessores das naus do século XVI.O objectivo deste trabalho é também retomar e rever um assunto muito debatidodesde há muito pelos historiadores portugueses com base em novos documentos.en_US
