| dc.description | It is a flat-bottomed wooden boat inspired by the Venetian gondola, from which it stands out for some peculiarities. Its bow is pointed, while the bridge is equipped with a threshold that facilitates entry for passengers. The boat is 7 m long and 2 m wide and can accommodate 18 people. It is operated with a special two-row "standing rowing" technique. There are various theories on the origin of the name "pletna". The first states that the name derives from the fact that the roof was originally woven (in Slovenian pletena). Another theory claims that the name derives from the German word "plateboot" which indicates a flat-bottomed boat. That of the boatman (pletnar) is still a coveted profession that cannot be practiced by anyone. In Maria Theresa's time the property rights of the pletne were granted to those peasants to whom the poorer quality lands were assigned. Since then, the assignment has been handed down from father to son, therefore the profession of boatman has been practiced for several centuries by members of the same family. There are a total of 23 pletne on Lake Bled. The boatmen await their customers in the thermal park (Zdraviliški park), in Mlino and in Velika Zaka. | en_US |
