Management of traditional folkboats collections in maritime museums in poland and abroad

Abstract

The paper presents the complex character of the old boats collection owned by the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. The paper includes pictures of boats from Polish Baltic Coast and Vistula River. On the basis of examples from Poland and abroad, the author shows the specific character of such collections and their role in comparison with other museum collections. There have been highlighted problems related to the storage, maintenance and presentation of the boats. Article refers to databases of nautical relicts and the possibility to make them accessible for a wider public in electronic form. There are conducted analysis the lack of specialized workshops and professionals dealing with problems with maintenance and renovation of boatbuilding objects. This problem is visible not only in Poland but also in the Nordic countries and Western Europe.
