Modelos teóricos y métodos de cálculo para el comportamiento estructural de los navíos construidos a la española y a la inglesa (1710-1760)

Abstract

La Tesis Doctoral analiza la estructura de los navíos del siglo XVIII construidos a la española y a la inglesa y estudia su comportamiento estructural. En el desarrollo de los trabajos realizados se presentan dos partes claramente diferenciadas. La primera parte de la Tesis Doctoral es de carácter histórico. En ella se analizan dos de los estilos de construcción naval de más revelancia en el siglo XVIII, las escuelas española e inglesa, y se identifican las diferencias más significativas entre ambos de una manera detallada. Se describe la evolución histórica de los métodos de construcción de la época y se analizan con gran profusión de detalles los distintos elementos utilizados, haciendo hincapié en los rasgos diferenciadores de ambos estilos de construcción. En esta parte es muy importante la labor de investigación documental realizada, ordenándose los acontecimientos y los métodos de construcción cronológicamente. La segunda parte de la Tesis Doctoral es de carácter técnico. En ella se propone un modelo mecánico simple para analizar las características mecánicas y estructurales de la madera. Basándose en el modelo anterior se propone un método para el análisis de las estructuras de madera de los navíos de la época. Se estudian los detalles estructurales locales de los navíos y se analizan los elementos diferenciadores de las dos escuelas de construcción naval presentados en la parte histórica. El trabajo se completa con las transcripciones de los documentos históricos en los que se basan los trabajos presentados en la Tesis Doctoral. / The Doctoral Thesis analyzes the structure of 18th century ships built in the Spanish and English style and studies their structural behaviour. In the development of the work carried out, two clearly differentiated parts are presented. The first part of the Doctoral Thesis is of a historical nature. It analyzes two of the most relevant shipbuilding styles in the 18th century, the Spanish and English schools, and identifies the most significant differences between them in detail. The historical evolution of the construction methods of the time is described and the different elements used are analyzed in great detail, emphasizing the differentiating features of both construction styles. In this part, the work of documentary research carried out is very important, ordering the events and construction methods chronologically. The second part of the Doctoral Thesis is of a technical nature. It proposes a simple mechanical model to analyze the mechanical and structural characteristics of wood. Based on the previous model, a method is proposed for the analysis of the wooden structures of the ships of the time. The local structural details of the ships are studied and the differentiating elements of the two schools of shipbuilding presented in the historical part are analyzed. The work is completed with the transcriptions of the historical documents on which the works presented in the Doctoral Thesis are based.
