In the Golden Age, the Guadalquivir and its banks were a microcosm in which love, celebration, color and the richness of American silver were superimposed on the fights, theft or the hardships of the galley slaves, at the same time that it constituted the daily horizon of sailors, boatmen, riverbank carpenters, caulkers, fishermen, sweepers, customs officials, soldiers, rogues and smugglers. Its waters intertwined, in perfect symbiosis, leisure and business, opulence and misery, the spirited impetus of its moment of splendor and the meek flow of its slow decline. |
